Classical Tamil literature or Sangam literature, references two uses of sandalwood; one of which was burning and the other pasting. Ancient Tamils burned fragrant sandalwood and frankincense to help dry the long hair of women and applied sandalwood paste to the bodies of ancient Tamil warriors due to its anti-septic properties. Sandalwood was also one of the many items Tamils exported to foreign countries during the ancient sea trade. Its importance in religious rituals gained popularity during the Vedic era. Currently sandalwood is made into incense and also made into a paste to apply on the forehead, between the eyes where the Third Eye is said to be located. It is said to protect that spot by cooling it and clearing the mind so that meditation can begin. Our candle Nimmathi, combines sandalwood and frankincense to create the perfect aroma for meditation and deep-relaxation.
