Incense sticks known as agarbathi or uthupathi in Tamil have been used in religious worship, ceremonies, and even to deodorize air and repell insects as early as 5000 BCE. The word itself originates from the Dravidian, probably Tamil, root word agil or agir which is used in ancient Tamil literature or Sangam literature to reference fragrant wood or agarwood; a popular constituent in the making of agarbathi. The modern agarbatti industry, which began in the 19th century, can be traced to the rural village of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu and since has spread to neighboring areas. Our candle Agarbathi combines the aromas of agarwood, one of the oldest materials used in incense, and champaka flower to recreate the most popular incense scent of today's world.
