6 Tips for Oiling Your Hair

The centuries-old tradition of oiling hair involves applying a nutrient dense oil followed by an invigorating scalp massage to stimulate the scalp and hair follicles. This isn't only done on women but everyone, including men and children. If you are new to hair-oiling, here are six tips to help you get started.

1. Prior to oiling your hair, use a wooden brush or comb to detangle your hair and stimulate the scalp.

2. Apply your hair oil of choice, concentrating on the scalp and ends of your hair, then combing through with your fingers to lightly coat the hair from root to tip. I use about 3 droppers full of oil and a little extra for the ends during the winter months when my hair tends to be dryer than usual.

3. Do not over-saturate your hair with oil as it will require a lot of shampoo to wash it off, which in turn will result in dry hair.

4. Massage the scalp with your fingers and palms to help increase blood flow and encourage hair growth. Spend at least five minutes doing this. Tutorial on the scalp massage will be coming soon!

5. Leave the oil on your hair for an hour prior to washing.

6. Repeat weekly during the hotter months and less frequently during colder months. Keep in mind that oiling has a cooling effect on the body and can make your body prone to colds. I tend to make a cup of masala tea or ginger tea, both of which are warming, to have right after shower during winter. This will help offset the cooling effect of oiling on the body.
