5 Reasons Your Hair is Not Growing

If your goal is to grow your hair and it is not growing, it could be a sign that your body or hair is lacking essential nutrients or care.

1. Not paying attention to your scalp

The condition of your scalp determines the health of your hair follicles. Clogged follicles due to product build-up and inflammation on the scalp can lead to damaged follicles. While oiling, always stimulate the scalp with a massage to increase blood circulation and encourage hair growth. A clean scalp and good blood circulation mean healthy hair follicles and hair growth.

2. Oiling routine is non-existent or non-consistent

Oiling your hair 1-2 times a week is proven to be very effective at helping your hair grow, especially when combined with a scalp massage. Oiling also helps strengthen hair and prevents breakage, which allows you to retain length as your hair grows. However, it can take up to six months of consistent oiling to notice substantial fullness and length.

3. Missing key nutrients in your diet

Vitamin D, iron, B vitamins, and zinc are all important nutrients for healthy hair and skin. If you are experiencing deficiencies in any of these three essential nutrients, you will experience hair loss/shedding until you address the deficiencies. No amount of oiling will counteract hair loss caused by nutritional deficiencies. See a doctor and take any necessary supplements. It can take 3-6 months before you notice a difference.

4. Underlying health issues

Certain medical conditions like prolonged stress can elevate your stress hormones/cortisol levels, which can contribute to hair loss. Autoimmune conditions like lupus, thyroid disorders, as well as imbalanced hormones can all lead to patchy loss, thinning, or shedding. For the most part, as long as your health conditions are being addressed and you are using the right products, hair fullness and length are possible.

5. Not using the right products for your hair type

If you have low porosity hair, you will notice shedding and breakage if you use thicker oils/butters, haircare with protein in it, and if you don't clarify your scalp and hair shaft from product build-up. If you have high porosity hair, over using products with protein and not hydrating your hair enough can lead to dry, brittle hair and thus breakage. Do your research and decide what products and oils are best for your specific hair type.
